Duramax Engine Problems: LB7 to L5P Troubleshooting by Generation

Duramax diesel engines are renowned for their power, reliability, and fuel efficiency. But “reliable” doesn’t mean “indestructible” — and every generation has its own weak spot. The key difference between an LB7 owner who replaces injectors once and one who does it three times? Knowing what you’re up against before the smoke starts.

  • Symptoms: P2459 (DPF regen frequency) or P2463 (DPF restriction), black smoke under acceleration, fuel economy dropping to single digits, and a truck that smells like a kerosene heater.

2. 9th Injector Failure
