Under normal conditions at cruise, the computer opens the EGR and advances the timing 40 degrees. With a malfunctioning EGR, this causes pinging. Using the EGR delete, it puts the computer into a mode that doesn't operate the EGR, and doesn't advance timing at cruise. No more pinging!
