The only exception is if a previous owner swapped a 2003-2007 transmission into a 2008-2010 truck — measure the pan depth or compare the old filter before installing.

3. Do I need to replace the external transmission filter?

It depends on your truck’s build date. Early 2008 build trucks retained the external FT-145 inline filter on the passenger-side frame rail. 2009 and 2010 models do not have it — Ford eliminated the external filter in late 2008 and changed the internal filter design to compensate. If you see a spin-on canister on your frame rail cooler lines, replace it at every pan-drop service ($15-25, 90 seconds). If there’s no external filter housing, you only have the internal FT180 to worry about.

4. How much fluid do I need?

A pan-drop service on the 2008-2010 deep-pan 5R110W drains approximately 7-8 quarts. The final refill amount varies — one mechanic used exactly 9 quarts; another used 10 quarts for the same job. The range is 8-10 quarts depending on how completely the torque converter and cooler lines drain. Buy two 5-quart jugs of MERCON LV to cover the fill with margin. The total system capacity is about 17.5 quarts. If you’re doing a full cooler-line flush, expect to use 18-20 quarts for a complete exchange.

5. What’s the difference between the internal FT180 and the internal FT-145?

The internal FT-145 (Motorcraft 3C3Z-7A098-AA) is for 2003-2007 6.0L shallow-pan 5R110W transmissions. The FT180 (Motorcraft 8C3Z-7A098-D) is for 2008-2010 6.4L deep-pan 5R110W transmissions. The FT180 is physically wider (4-3/8") and has a longer pickup neck to reach deeper into the pan. They are not interchangeable. The external inline filter — confusingly also called FT-145 — is a completely different part that fits all years.

6. Can I use MERCON LV instead of MERCON SP?

Yes, per Ford TSB 14-0089. MERCON LV is thinner (6.0 cSt vs. 7.5 cSt at operating temperature) and was backward-approved by Ford for all 5R110W applications. It’s cheaper, more widely available, and provides better cold-weather shift quality. However, if you tow heavy (over 10,000 lbs) in hot climates, consider sticking with MERCON SP for its higher viscosity overhead. Either is acceptable — neither is wrong.

7. Why is the TruckTok FT180 more expensive than the genuine Motorcraft?

The Motorcraft FT-180 is a single-layer cellulose media filter with a Buna-N O-ring. It meets the minimum OE specification. The TruckTok FT180 uses a dual-stage synthetic-blend media, a Viton O-ring rated to 400°F, and a glass-fiber-reinforced polymer body. It’s engineered to a higher materials specification — which costs more to manufacture. Whether that’s worth the extra $19-33 over the eBay Motorcraft price depends on your truck’s usage and your tolerance for transmission risk.

8. Does the factory pan have a drain plug?

Yes. The 2008-2010 deep-pan 5R110W has a 13mm drain plug on the bottom of the pan. This contradicts what many online forums claim, but our install video mechanic confirmed it on a 2010 F-250: “Go ahead and pull this drain plug which is gonna be a 13 millimeter.” Drain through the plug first, then remove the pan — far less messy than cracking a full pan. Use a crush washer and don’t over-torque the plug when reinstalling.

9. How can I tell if my old filter was failing?

Inspect the old filter after removal. Look for: (1) collapsed or deformed filter media — indicates the filter was clogged and the pump was pulling vacuum hard enough to crush it, (2) a loose or cracked pickup neck O-ring — common on high-mileage filters and a direct path for air ingestion, (3) excessive metallic debris trapped in the media — visible metal embedded in the filter surface means accelerated internal wear. If the filter body is warped, the transmission has been operating at temperatures high enough to soften the polymer — investigate the cooling system.

10. Is this the same transmission as the 6.0L Powerstroke’s?

Yes and no. It’s the same 5R110W TorqShift transmission family, but the 6.4L version received internal improvements for the higher torque output (the 6.4L produces 650 lb-ft stock vs. the 6.0L’s 570 lb-ft). The torque converter is different, the valve body calibration is different, and — most relevant here — the pan and internal filter are different. The transmission case and bellhousing pattern are the same, which is why the external filter (FT-145 inline) fits all years.

11. What are the symptoms of a clogged 5R110W internal filter?

  • Delayed engagement when shifting from Park to Reverse or Drive
  • Harsh or erratic shifts, especially when the transmission is cold
  • Transmission overheating (gauge climbing above 220°F under normal driving)
  • Whining or buzzing noise from the pump area (the pump working harder to pull fluid through a restricted filter)
  • Slipping between gears under light to moderate throttle
  • Torque converter shudder at highway speeds

If you experience any of these symptoms, check the fluid level first, then consider a pan-drop to inspect the filter. Symptoms that appear suddenly or worsen rapidly warrant immediate attention — pump damage from a collapsed filter is not reversible without a rebuild.

12. Can I change just the fluid without dropping the pan?

You can do a fluid exchange through the cooler lines without dropping the pan — but you shouldn’t skip the filter change. The filter is the primary sediment trap for wear material generated since the last service. Draining old fluid and leaving a loaded filter in place is like changing your engine oil but leaving the old oil filter. If the fluid is due, the filter is due. Do both.

13. Does this filter fit 2011 and newer Super Duty trucks (6.2L or 6.7L)?

No. Starting in the 2011 model year, Ford completely replaced the 5R110W 5-speed transmission with the 6R140 TorqShift 6-speed across the entire Super Duty lineup (both 6.2L V8 gas and 6.7L Powerstroke diesel). The 6R140 uses an entirely different internal filter (BC3Z-7A098-B). The TruckTok FT180 is strictly for 2008–2010 Super Duty trucks equipped with the deep-pan 5R110W transmission.
