DIY Installation: Two Spin-On Filters, Two Wrenches

Fuel Filter (TP3018)
Location depends on generation:
- LB7 (2001-2004): Passenger-side frame rail, just ahead of the rear wheel. The filter assembly is mounted vertically on the inside of the frame rail. Accessed from under the truck — a creeper helps.
- LLY (2004.5-2005): Under the hood, passenger-side firewall. It is packed tight between the engine and the firewall. - LBZ / LMM (2006-2010): Under the hood, passenger-side firewall — same location as LLY. The filter head has both a manual primer button and an electric lift pump in the tank.
- LML (2011-2016): Located under the hood on the **passenger-side firewall** (same position as LLY, LBZ, and LMM). Access is tight from the engine bay, so removing the passenger-side inner fender liner provides the cleanest workspace. Step 1 — Open the water-in-fuel drain. Before removing the filter, place a drain pan underneath and open the WIF drain valve. Location varies by generation: on LB7 it is at the bottom of the frame-rail filter housing (plastic wing-nut or knob); on LLY/LBZ/LMM it is at the bottom of the under-hood filter (passenger side); on LML it is a drain valve at the bottom of the passenger-side filter housing — lift it upward. Let water and sediment drain completely. Close it when clean diesel flows. Step 2 — Remove the inner fender well for access (LLY/LBZ/LMM under-hood trucks). Cut a rectangular opening in the liner (about 3/4" larger than the door on all sides), mount the door with push pins, and from that point on you change the filter through the access door without removing a single fastener. Step 3 — Unplug the WIF sensor and remove the filter. For under-hood trucks (LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML): disconnect the wire harness at the bottom of the filter housing before removal. Push the tab down with your thumb and pull the connector straight out — do not yank the wires. The plastic connector clip gets brittle with age and heat cycles; if it breaks, zip-tie the connector in place after reinstallation. For LB7 frame-rail trucks, the WIF sensor is integrated into the filter base. Place a rag under the filter to catch diesel spillage. Use a strap wrench or filter pliers to spin the old filter counterclockwise. Be careful — on LLY/LBZ/LMM trucks, the WIF sensor cap is plastic. When removing the WIF sensor from the old filter, use a large pair of channel locks and turn slowly — the plastic threads strip easily. Once the sensor is out, inspect the old O-ring on the sensor stem. If it stayed stuck in the old filter, pick it out with a pick or small flathead screwdriver. The new filter should come with two fresh O-rings in the box — one for the WIF sensor stem, one for the filter housing sealing surface.
Pro tip — dump the old fuel into a clear container: Before tossing the old filter, dump the remaining fuel from it into a clear bucket or jar. Let it settle for 30 seconds. What you are looking for: hard gritty particles (metal from pump/injector wear — bad sign, get a professional diagnosis), soft debris (normal carbon and media wear), or water beads floating on top (diesel contamination — treat your tank with a water dispersant). Step 4 — Install O-rings and pre-fill. Coat both new O-rings with fresh motor oil (not diesel — motor oil stays put and provides better initial lubrication). Slide the smaller O-ring onto the WIF sensor stem, then screw the WIF sensor back into the bottom of the new filter. Hand-tighten, then snug with channel locks — do not over-torque, the cap is plastic. About 1/2 turn past hand-tight is plenty; any more and you are risking a cracked sensor body. Fill the new TP3018 about 3/4 full with clean diesel fuel before spinning it onto the housing. This minimizes the air gap the priming system has to purge — fewer pumps, faster prime. Optional: some owners skip pre-filling entirely and rely on the manual primer pump to fill the filter from dry. This works fine (the primer pump is designed for exactly this) and avoids spilling diesel everywhere. The tradeoff: expect roughly 35-40 pumps instead of 15-20. Do NOT pre-fill with ATF, fuel additives, or anything other than clean diesel — they can alter the media’s water-separation coating. Check the large O-ring on the filter housing sealing surface — make sure it is seated in the groove before spinning the filter on.
⚠️ Inspect the new filter before installing. Grab the filter and gently pull on the internal element — it should be firmly attached to the base and not move. A major brand (Wix) was found with the filter media completely separated from the base right out of the box — the glue had failed during manufacturing. If the element shifts or comes loose before installation, do not use it. Return it and get a replacement. Two minutes of inspection beats a collapsed filter starving your CP3 of fuel 5,000 miles from home.
Sharpie trick: Before spinning the filter on, write your next scheduled service mileage on the canister with a permanent marker — both sides so you will see it regardless of orientation. Example: “Next: 236,000 (25K).” When you are under the truck six months from now trying to remember when you last changed it, the answer is right there.
Step 5 — Spin on the new filter. Lubricate the gasket with a thin film of clean diesel. Hand-tighten until the gasket contacts the housing, then 1/4 to 1/2 turn further — the filter housing itself has “1/4 turn” stamped on the side as a guideline. Do NOT use a wrench to tighten — over-torquing crushes the gasket and creates a leak path, and the next person (possibly future-you) will need a breaker bar and a prayer to remove it. For under-hood trucks (LLY/LBZ/LMM/LML): before tightening fully, make sure the WIF sensor connector on the bottom of the filter is oriented so the wiring harness can reach it without stretching. Plug the WIF sensor connector back in — push it on until it clicks.
Step 6 — Prime the system. The priming procedure depends on your generation — this is where most tutorials get it wrong by assuming every Duramax uses the same method:
- LB7 (2001-2004): No lift pump from the factory. The CP3 injection pump pulls fuel under vacuum. After installing the new filter, crank the engine in 10-15 second bursts with 30 seconds of rest between attempts. It may take 3-4 cranking cycles before the engine fires. Do not crank continuously — the starter motor is not designed for extended cranking and will overheat.
- LLY (2004.5-2005): Manual primer pump on top of the filter housing, plus a bleeder valve. ⚠️ The factory bleeder screw is plastic and notorious for stripping — especially if you are stranded with only a flathead screwdriver. Replace it with a brass bleeder screw (available at any auto parts store for a few dollars, often sold in 5-packs). The brass version has a proper O-ring and will not strip. To prime: thread the bleeder screw in halfway (not fully seated — you need it loose enough for air to escape), then pump the manual primer button. Technique matters: open the bleeder screw wider on the downstroke of the pump, close it partially on the upstroke. This pushes air out while preventing air from being sucked back into the system. Open the bleeder screw about 2 to 2.5 turns — one turn is usually not enough, and you will hear air hissing out with each pump stroke as confirmation it is working. Expect roughly 35-40 pumps before fuel starts bubbling out (a dry filter housing takes time to fill). When clean fuel flows steadily with no air bubbles, snug the bleeder screw closed, give a few extra primes to pressurize, and wipe up any spilled fuel with a rag. Start the engine and verify no leaks.
- LBZ / LMM (2006-2010): Two methods work. Method A (electric): cycle the key to RUN (not START) for 30 seconds — you will hear the lift pump hum from the fuel tank area. Repeat 5-6 times. Method B (manual): the filter head has both a manual primer button and a 13mm (or 1/2") bleed nut. The factory bleed nut is plastic — same upgrade advice as the LLY applies: swap to brass. Thread the bleed screw in halfway, open it 2-2.5 turns, and use the same open-on-downstroke / close-on-upstroke technique. Expect ~35-40 pumps before fuel bubbles out. When clean fuel flows with no bubbles, snug the bleed screw closed, give a few extra primes to pressurize, and start the engine. Either method works — use whichever is faster for you.
- LML (2011-2016): Contrary to common internet myths, the 2011–2016 LML Duramax **does NOT have a factory electric lift pump**. The Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump pulls fuel under vacuum, meaning you **MUST manually prime the system** using the primer button and bleeder screw on the filter head.
Step 7 — Start the engine and check for leaks. It may crank longer than normal on the first start — 5-10 seconds is normal as residual air purges. Once running, let it idle for 30 seconds, then shut it off. Restart a second time — this ensures the fuel system is fully pressurized and reveals any leaks that only appear under sustained pressure. Inspect the filter base and housing for fuel seepage on both starts. If wet, tighten the filter an additional 1/8 turn by hand. If the filter head housing itself is wet (not just the filter seal), see Mistake #6 — your housing O-rings may be failing.
Oil Filter (PF2232)
Step 1 — Drain the oil. This is a standard oil change — 10 quarts of 15W-40 (or 5W-40 synthetic for cold climates). If your truck has the factory skid plate (4x 15mm bolts), removing it takes 2 minutes and keeps the mess off the shield. Remove the oil pan drain plug: 13mm socket for LML (2011-2016), 15mm or 16mm for earlier years — GM changed the pan design with the LML. Reinstall torque: 18 ft-lbs. Do NOT over-tighten — a breaker bar should never be needed to remove a drain plug. If your plug is cranked on that hard, someone before you used an impact gun.
While the plug is out, inspect it: (1) wipe it clean with brake cleaner or a rag and check for metal shavings on the magnetic tip — fine metallic paste is normal, actual chips are not; (2) verify the copper crush washer came off with the plug — if it is stuck on the oil pan, pick it off and replace it; (3) check the threads for cross-threading or galling. A replacement drain plug costs a few dollars and is cheap insurance against a stripped pan.
Let the oil drain completely. The Duramax oil pan holds nearly a gallon of used oil — use a 12+ quart drain pan. While it drains, move to the oil filter.
Step 2 — Remove the old oil filter. The PF2232 location is on the passenger side of the engine block, above the front differential. It is accessible from underneath — no need to remove skid plates on most trucks. Use a filter wrench to break it loose, then spin off by hand. Expect oil to run down your arm. That is part of the experience.
Step 3 — Inspect the old filter gasket. Sometimes the old rubber gasket stays stuck to the engine block when you remove the filter. Run your finger around the mounting surface. If you feel the old gasket, peel it off. Installing a new filter on top of an old gasket guarantees a double-gasket leak — oil everywhere, engine shutdown, very bad day.
Step 4 — Pre-fill and install the new filter. Fill the new PF2232 about halfway with fresh oil — the Duramax filter sits at a slant when installed, and overfilling will just dump fresh oil everywhere the moment you angle it up. This primes the filter media and reduces the time the engine runs without oil pressure on first start. Lubricate the gasket with clean oil. Spin on hand-tight until the gasket contacts, then 3/4 turn further. No wrench for tightening — the silicone gasket creates a positive seal with hand torque alone, and the next guy (probably you) will curse your name if a breaker bar is needed to remove it.
Step 5 — Refill the engine. Pour in 9 quarts initially, then check the dipstick and top off to the full mark. The Duramax takes 10 quarts with a filter change. The dipstick is on the passenger-side firewall — pull it, wipe it, reinsert fully, then pull again for an accurate reading. Start the engine, let it idle for 30 seconds and verify oil pressure rises on the gauge, shut it off, and recheck the dipstick after waiting about a minute for oil to drain back to the pan. The filter will absorb about half a quart — expect to add a partial quart after the first start.
Step 6 — Reset the oil life monitor.
Method A — 3-pedal (universal, works on every Duramax 2001-2016): Turn the key to RUN or accessory (don’t start). Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal three times within 5 seconds. The “Change Engine Oil” or “Oil Life” warning resets to 100% immediately. This is the foolproof method — it works regardless of trim level, DIC package, or model year.
Method B — Steering wheel DIC (LBZ/LMM/LML with Driver Information Center): If your truck has steering wheel controls, this is the same net result with a different route. Press the fuel pump icon (⛽) to cycle through the information screens until you see “Oil Life XX%.” Press and hold the right arrow (▶) or checkmark (✓) button until the display resets to 100%. Release, then press again to confirm. If your DIC does not show an oil life option, use Method A — it always works.
These two methods perform the exact same reset. After resetting, start the engine and verify the warning light is gone.
After the Job: Reset the Fuel Filter Life Monitor (LBZ / LMM / LML)
The Duramax has a separate fuel filter life counter from the oil life monitor — and most owners do not know it exists. After changing the fuel filter, reset it so the truck does not nag you with a “Change Fuel Filter” message before the next interval.
- LBZ / LMM (2006-2010) with DIC: Use the steering wheel controls to scroll through the Driver Information Center until you see “Fuel Filter Life Remaining” (usually showing a percentage). Press and hold the checkmark (✓) button for several seconds. The display resets to 100%.
- LML (2011-2016): Same procedure — scroll to “Fuel Filter Life” in the DIC, press and hold ✓ until it resets.

Five Expensive Mistakes Duramax Owners Make
Mistake #1: Running a Cheap Fuel Filter Until It Collapses
A Duramax lift pump pulls fuel through the filter under vacuum. A clogged filter increases that vacuum until the media physically collapses inward, creating a direct bypass path or complete blockage. A collapsed fuel filter starves the CP3/CP4 of fuel, which starves the injectors of lubrication and cooling — diesel fuel is the only lubricant and coolant for the injection pump and injectors. Running a $19 generic TP3018 for 20,000 miles is not saving money. It is gambling $6,000 in injectors against $30 in filter savings. The math does not work.
Mistake #2: Not Draining the Water Separator
The WIF (Water In Fuel) drain at the bottom of the fuel filter housing exists for a reason. Water is heavier than diesel and settles at the bottom of the filter. Over time, it accumulates, promotes microbial growth, and eventually gets pulled into the injection system when the water layer reaches the fuel pickup. Drain the WIF at every oil change — it takes 10 seconds. If you have never done this and your truck has 100,000+ miles, the first drain might look like rusty pond water. That is what your injectors have been drinking.
Mistake #3: Pre-Filling the Fuel Filter With ATF
Some owners pre-fill new fuel filters with ATF (automatic transmission fluid) because “it cleans the injectors.” ATF is hydraulic fluid with friction modifiers and detergents designed for wet clutches, not high-pressure diesel injection. Pouring ATF through a diesel fuel filter strips the water-separating coating from the media and introduces chemicals that can swell injector O-rings. Pre-fill with clean diesel only. If you want to clean your injectors, buy a diesel-specific injector cleaner and add it to the fuel tank — not the filter.
Mistake #4: Skipping the Oil Filter at Every Other Oil Change
