Diesel Truck Maintenance Checklist: 15 Things Every Owner Should Check Monthly

Maintaining your vehicle is crucial to ensuring its smooth and safe operation. Regular car maintenance can not only extend the service life of a car, but also improve its performance. Under the Hood — 5 Checks (5 Minutes)

1. Oil Level + Condition

Pull the dipstick on a cold engine. Level between the marks is step one — but the real intel is how the oil looks and smells.

If the oil level is above the full mark and smells like diesel fuel, you’ve got unburnt fuel washing past the rings — common on trucks that idle excessively or run short trips where the engine never reaches full operating temperature. Diluted oil loses its lubricity fast, and a 6.7 Powerstroke or Duramax pushing 30,000 PSI through the injectors won’t tolerate thin oil. Fix the cause (reduce idling, address injector over-fueling), change the oil immediately.

2. Coolant Level + Color

Check the degas bottle when the engine is cold. The level should sit at the cold-fill line. Low coolant on a diesel is never just “top it off” — it went somewhere. Check for: white residue around the EGR cooler (internal leak), coolant smell in the exhaust (head gasket), or drips under the water pump.

What color is it?

Ford Yellow should be bright yellow. GM Dex-Cool should be a clean pink/peach color, not a murky, muddy pink or oily brown. If it’s turning milky or has oil floating on top, you’ve got an oil cooler failure — a $1,500-$3,000 repair that’s cheaper to catch before it contaminates the entire cooling system.

3. Belt Condition

Serpentine belt inspection takes 10 seconds: run your thumb along the ribbed side.

  • Cracks across the ribs = replace this weekend.
  • Missing chunks = replace today.
  • Glazed or shiny spots on the smooth side = belt slip

This usually caused by a weak tensioner. On the 6.7 Powerstroke with dual belts, check both. A snapped primary belt kills the water pump instantly — you’ve got under 60 seconds before a towing diesel overheats.

4. Air Filter

Pop the clips, pull the element, hold it up to the sun. If you can’t see light through the pleats, it’s done. Diesel engines move twice the air volume of gas engines at full load — a restricted filter kills fuel economy and increases smoke output before it throws a code. If you drive gravel roads or job sites, check it monthly regardless of mileage.

5. CCV / PCV Filter Check

On the 6.7 Powerstroke, locate the CCV filter box on the valve cover. If the seams are wet with oil, the internal filter media is saturated and crankcase pressure is building. On the Duramax, check the PCV hose where it enters the intake tube — wet oil here means the system is pulling oil mist into the turbo inlet. A $60 filter replacement now beats a $2,500 turbo rebuild later.

Under the Truck — 5 Checks (5 Minutes)

1. Fuel Filter Water Drain

Every diesel fuel filter housing has a water drain valve — on the 6.7 Powerstroke it’s a yellow lever on the frame-mounted HFCM filter under the driver’s door. Crack it open into a clear bottle. Water looks like a bubble at the bottom of the diesel. If you get more than a few drops, drain it fully and consider where the water came from. One drop of water past the filter into a CP4 pump = $8,000-$12,000. This check costs nothing and takes 30 seconds.

2. Leaks — Coolant, Oil, Fuel

Slide under the truck with a flashlight. Look at the transmission bellhousing (rear main seal), the oil pan gasket, and around the turbo oil feed line. Red/pink = transmission fluid or coolant. Black = engine oil. Greenish = diesel fuel (smell it to confirm). Wetness at the fuel filter housing after a recent change = o-ring didn’t seat properly — fix it before it sucks air into the fuel system and causes a no-start.

3. Exhaust — Soot Around Connections

Black soot streaks at any exhaust joint = a leak. Pre-turbo exhaust leaks are especially dangerous — they let exhaust gas escape before the turbo, which means lost boost pressure, higher EGTs, and on trucks with EGR, a false reading that throws off the air-fuel ratio. Post-turbo leaks are less critical but mean your exhaust isn’t flowing efficiently. Either way, a soot-marked joint needs a new gasket or clamp before it worsens.

4. Driveshaft U-Joints + Carrier Bearing

Grab the driveshaft and try to shake it. Any play at the U-joints = replacement. A sloppy carrier bearing on a two-piece shaft produces a vibration that worsens under load. U-joint failure at highway speed can take out the transmission tail housing.

5. DEF Tank + Lines (If Not Deleted)

If your truck still runs DEF, glance at the tank, the fill neck, and the lines running to the SCR injector. White crystalline buildup anywhere = DEF leak. DEF crystallizes when exposed to air, and those crystals are corrosive to wiring and connectors. A leaking DEF line near the DEF injector will eventually short the NOx sensor harness.

Inside the Cab — 3 Checks (2 Minutes)

1. Dash Lights — P2459 Is Your Early Warning

Cycle the key to ON without starting. Every warning light should illuminate briefly, then most should go out. If the check engine light stays on, read the code. 

P2459 (DPF regeneration frequency) 

It is the diesel-specific code you need to catch early — it means the truck is attempting regeneration more often than normal, which indicates a partially plugged DPF that can still be saved with a forced highway regen. Ignore it and it escalates to P2463 (DPF restriction — soot load excessive) and a $3,000+ replacement.

2. Boost Gauge at Idle vs Cruise

If your truck has a boost gauge, watch it. At warm idle, boost should read 0-1 PSI. At steady 65 MPH cruise on flat ground, 2-5 PSI is normal. If you’re seeing higher numbers at cruise or fluctuating boost without throttle change, you’ve got a boost leak — check intercooler boots and CAC tubes for oil residue.

3. Exhaust Brake / Engine Brake Function

Cycle the exhaust brake on and off at idle. You should hear the turbo vanes move and feel the engine note change. A stuck VGT actuator (common on 6.7 Powerstroke and Duramax) causes poor engine braking, sluggish turbo lag, and eventually catastrophic turbo failure from excessive exhaust drive pressure and thermal stress.

Tires & Brakes — 2 Checks (3 Minutes)

1. Tire Pressure + Uneven Wear

Diesel trucks are heavy — underinflated tires on a 8,000-lb truck generate enough heat to cause a blowout. Use an actual gauge, not the TPMS display. Check the inner and outer tread edges by running your hand across the tread:

  • Cupping or scalloping = bad shocks.
  • Inner edge wear = alignment.
  • Center wear = overinflation. 

Rotate every other oil change (10,000 miles) to keep wear even.

2. Brake Pad Thickness

Look through the caliper window or use a flashlight. Less than 4mm of pad material = replace this month. On trucks that tow heavy, check the rear pads too — trailer braking shifts load off the truck’s rear axle, but when the trailer brakes are poorly adjusted, the truck’s rear brakes take the abuse. Squealers are your last warning; by the time you hear metal-on-metal, you’re buying rotors too.
