Cam Phaser Rattle

A loud rattling/knocking noise from the front of the engine on cold startup, lasting 1-3 seconds. Caused by the variable cam timing (VCT) phasers losing oil pressure internally after the engine is shut off — the locking pin fails to engage, and the phaser rattles against its stops on the next startup until oil pressure builds.

Some 2018-2020 3.5L EcoBoosts burn oil at an alarming rate through the PCV system. Ford’s own TSB 19-2235 acknowledges consumption up to 1 quart per 1,000 miles as “normal” for this engine. The root cause is a combination of low-tension piston rings designed for fuel efficiency and PCV system routing that pulls oil mist into the intake under high vacuum conditions.

Gen 3 is the best 3.5L EcoBoost Ford has built. Cam phaser complaints are down; oil consumption is improved; the 10R80 transmission (after multiple TSB updates) is mostly sorted. The 2.7L uses a compacted graphite iron block, dual injection from day one, and has no cam phaser history. It’s arguably Ford’s most reliable EcoBoost. If you need the 3.5L, demand proof of timing chain replacement — a Gen 1 without it is a $3,000 time bomb.

If you’re spending $25,000-$35,000: Gen 2.5 (2017-2020) is the volume segment — but you must verify the cam phasers have been replaced with the updated TSB 21-2119 parts. If budget allows ($35,000+): Gen 3 (2021-2024) is the answer.
