Step 5 — Install the new filter. Snap the large sealing O-ring into the top groove of the new filter — it fits either side up, there is no orientation. Check that the O-ring is seated evenly all the way around before threading the filter on (a twisted O-ring that slips out of the groove during installation is the #1 cause of post-change fuel leaks). Thread the filter onto the housing nipple by hand until the O-ring makes contact. Then go hand-tight — firmly snug by hand is enough. Step 6 — Prime with the manual plunger (not the key). This is the step that separates a successful Duramax fuel filter change from a no-start that leaves you stranded. The LML’s in-tank lift pump does NOT automatically cycle when you turn the key to RUN. You must manually prime the system.
Locate the fuel filter housing on top of the engine (driver side, near the intake tube). Pump it using a two-handed technique: close the bleeder on the plunger’s upstroke, open it on the downstroke. Step 7 — Start and check. Fire up the engine. It should catch immediately and idle smooth. Let it run for 30 seconds, shut it off, and check the filter housing joint and the WIF sensor port for leaks with a clean paper towel. If it stumbles or fails to start, the system is still air-bound — repeat the plunger prime procedure. Once you confirm no leaks, reinstall the wheel well liner (7mm screws and push pins in reverse order).
Step 8 — Reset the fuel filter life monitor. Turn the key to RUN. On the DIC, scroll to Settings → Diesel Fuel Filter Life → press and hold the checkmark button until it resets to 100%. This is a separate monitor from the oil life monitor — resetting one does not reset the other.

Oil Filter (Spin-On, Lower Passenger Side Engine Block — Underneath)
The PF2232 is mounted on the passenger side of the engine block, just above the front differential/crossmember. Access it from underneath the truck or through the passenger wheel well — no top-of-engine dismantling required.
Tools: Oil filter wrench (strap or 74mm 15-flute cup-type), 13mm socket, ratchet, drain pan (16-quart capacity recommended — the LML dumps 10 quarts), 10 quarts 15W-40 diesel oil, funnel, clean rags, brake cleaner, replacement crush washer for the drain plug. Recommended: a sheet of aluminum foil (for the drain channel trick below).
Step 1 — Drain oil. Crawl under from behind the driver’s front tire — that gives the most clearance without a jack. The drain plug is on the bottom of the oil pan, facing the rear of the truck. It takes a 13mm socket (not 15mm — the LML plug is smaller than the earlier Duramax). Drive the truck for 3-5 minutes first to warm the oil, then drain for 15 minutes. The pan holds 10 quarts so make sure your catch pan can handle it — a 16-quart pan gives you margin.
Step 2 — Replace the crush washer. The LML drain plug uses a crush washer, not a flat gasket. When you pull the plug, the old crush washer may stick to the pan or fall into the drain pan. The new washer has two sides: one is coarser/softer, the other is harder. The softer side faces the oil pan so it crushes into the sealing surface. Slide the new washer onto the plug (hard side down, soft side up toward the pan), thread the plug in by hand, then torque to roughly 20 ft-lbs — hand-snug with a ratchet, not a breaker bar, is enough. Step 3 — Remove the old filter with the foil trick. Position yourself underneath the truck on the passenger side. The PF2232 sits vertically above the front differential. Before you unscrew it, take a sheet of aluminum foil, fold it into a channel about 3 inches wide, and tuck it directly under the filter base with the tip pointing down into your drain pan. As you loosen the filter, oil that spills from the seal runs smoothly down the foil into your pan instead of coating the frame rail and leaving a burned-oil smell for weeks. Unscrew the filter counterclockwise by hand (or use a strap/cup wrench through the wheel well if overtightened). Lower the filter straight down and check that the old rubber gasket came off with the filter — if it stayed stuck to the engine block, peel it off before installing the new oner.
Step 4 — Clean the mounting surface. Wipe the mating surface on the engine with a clean rag and brake cleaner. If oil residue stays on the surface, the new gasket will not seal evenly.
Step 5 — Prep and install the new filter. Pre-fill the new PF2232 with fresh oil to about 3/4 full — roughly to the bottom of the threads. Dip a finger in oil and coat the rubber gasket. Spin the filter into the well by hand until the gasket contacts the engine block, then tighten 3/4 to 1 full turn by hand. Do not use a wrench to tighten. The filter housing threads are aluminum and the PF2232 gasket seals with heat cycling — what feels hand-snug today will be significantly tighter after 500 miles of hot oil pressure.
Step 6 — Refill. Remove the oil fill cap on the passenger side valve cover. Cover the alternator with a rag before pouring. The fill neck is inches from the alternator housing and a splash of oil into the windings can short it. The LML takes 10 quarts exactly with a filter change. A 3-gallon Costco jug makes the math easy: 1 gallon = 4 quarts, so pour two full gallons (8 quarts) plus half of the third gallon (2 quarts). The small amount you pre-filled into the filter does not throw off the total — the dipstick is the final authority.
Step 7 — Prime, start, and check. Turn the key to RUN for 5 seconds, cycle OFF, repeat twice. On the third cycle, start the engine. Oil pressure should rise within 5 seconds. Let it idle for 2 minutes to spread the oil through the engine, then shut off. Crawl under and inspect the drain plug and the filter base for leaks. Wait 20 minutes for the oil to drain back from the valvetrain into the pan, then check the dipstick. The crosshatch zone represents about 1 quart from bottom to top — anywhere from the midpoint to the upper third is good.
Step 8 — Reset the oil life monitor. Turn the key to RUN without starting. On the DIC, scroll using the thumbwheel on the steering wheel until you reach the Oil Life screen (it shows a percentage). Press the right arrow button on the steering wheel controls — the display will ask if you want to reset. Press the checkmark (✓) button, then press Yes to confirm. The display resets to 100%.
Air Filter (Panel, Driver Side Engine Bay — Slide-Out, No Lid Bolts)
The A3141C air filter lives in a rectangular black plastic airbox on the driver side of the engine bay. There are no lid bolts. The filter slides straight out once you move the intake tube out of the way — the job is 5 minutes if you know the trick.
Tools: 10mm socket and ratchet, compressed air or shop vac (optional but highly recommended).
Step 1 — Free the intake tube. The rubber intake hose (the accordion-style tube connecting the airbox to the turbo inlet) blocks the filter from sliding out. Before touching the airbox, disconnect any sensors clipped to the intake tube — pull from the connector body, not the wires. Then remove the 10mm bolt holding the support brace bar that crosses in front of the intake tube. Peel back the weather stripping along the cowl above the airbox to give yourself finger room.
Step 2 — Move the tube out of the way. Push the accordion intake hose back and up toward the firewall. It is flexible and you only need 3-4 inches of clearance. You do not need to fully remove the tube or disconnect the airbox lid — the filter slides straight out with the tube pushed back.
Step 3 — Remove the old filter. Grip the filter frame and pull it straight out. It is not bolted, clipped, or retained by anything — it just sits inside the housing. On a truck with 60,000 miles on the original filter (as in the video above), the pleats will be caked with dirt, bugs, and Bakersfield farmland. The filter shown in the video was supposed to be changed at 10,000-20,000 miles in dusty conditions and was still in the truck at 60,000. It looked like a mulch pile.
Step 4 — Clean the airbox. Before dropping the new filter in, blow out the inside of the empty airbox with compressed air or vacuum it out. Dead bugs, sand, and weed fragments collect in the bottom tray. If you skip this, the new filter sits on top of the old debris, and the vacuum from the turbo pulls some of it through the pleat gaps on the first start.
Step 5 — Install the new filter. Slide the new A3141C into the housing. The filter is symmetric with the fins facing down and the plastic grating facing up — same as the old one came out. Ensure the filter seats evenly in the lower tray groove on all four sides.
Step 6 — Reassemble. Push the intake hose back into position, making sure the airbox lid’s bottom edge seats properly in the lower housing groove. Reinstall the 10mm brace bar bolt, reconnect any sensors you unplugged, and press the weather stripping back into place along the cowl. Hand-check that the accordion hose is fully seated on both ends — a gap at the turbo inlet means your engine is breathing unfiltered Bakersfield air.
Interval reality check: GM’s published interval is 15,000-30,000 miles, but the filter shown in this video at 60,000 miles was proof that the number depends entirely on where you drive. If you live in farm country, off-road regularly, or your home track has a dirt parking lot, check the filter at 10,000 miles and expect to change it at 15,000-20,000. A clogging air filter does not just cost horsepower — it forces the VGT turbo to compensate, which increases EGT, which triggers DPF regens, which burns fuel for no forward motion.
Five Expensive Mistakes LML Owners Make
1. Ignoring the WIF Sensor Drain
The water-in-fuel sensor at the bottom of the fuel filter housing is not decorative. It detects water accumulated in the bottom of the filter — water that has been separated from diesel and is sitting there, waiting to be drained. If the “Water in Fuel” message appears on the DIC, drain the housing immediately. Do not drive to the next exit. Water that gets past the filter enters the CP4.2, and the CP4.2 does not give second chances.
2. Running a “Lifetime” Air Filter
