Q: When should I choose the lock nut version over the standard screw pin?
A: If the shackle will stay mounted on your vehicle full-time, the lock nut prevents vibration-induced loosening. For a shackle that lives in your recovery bag and gets attached only during recoveries, the standard screw pin is fine. Permanent mount = lock nut, bag kit = standard pin.
Q: How does the lock nut and R-clip security system work?
A: The pin is a smooth shaft — not threaded — that slides through the shackle body. The large outer lock nut threads onto the pin end to prevent it from backing out under vibration, and an R-clip locks through the pin tip as a secondary fail-safe. Unlike a standard screw pin that threads directly into the shackle body, this design separates the securing force (lock nut) from the shear load (pin shaft) — a stronger and more secure configuration.
Q: Does the larger Mega D-Ring body affect compatibility with straps?
A: No — the 7/8" pin diameter is the same as our standard shackle, so strap fitment is identical. The larger body just provides more finger clearance during attachment.
Q: Will the lock nut seize up from rust or mud?
A: The galvanized finish protects the threads, but any threaded fastener can eventually seize if neglected. A drop of anti-seize on the threads once a year prevents issues. Rinse after muddy recoveries.
Q: Need a hitch receiver or recovery rope to go with this shackle?
A: Mount this shackle on our 70,000 lbs D-ring hitch receiver for a bulletproof vehicle anchor. For extraction, pair with a 1" x 30ft kinetic recovery rope.
